Early Life

Taz Emeran was born and bred in a disadvantaged community in Cape Town. She grew up in a caring family that protected her from negative influences within her community. She fell pregnant at the age of fifteen.

At 16, she relocated to Johannesburg and started working odd jobs to support her son and finance her way through school. She is the first to graduate as a doctor in her family. Her mother and stepfather supported her so much.

Her biological father wanted nothing to do with her when she fell pregnant. Her stepfather stepped up and took on the responsibility to help raise her son while she pursued her dreams.


Taz studied medicine at Wits University. She received over R471,000 in donations from South Africans to assist her to cover her debt in 2020. She completed her two-year internship at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

The medical doctor had funded her studies for the first three years before a sponsor offered to help her pay her fees. However, he never paid and left her hundreds of thousands of rand in arrears.

Taz had just finished her final medical exam when she got an email from the university telling her that she would not graduate until she had paid off all my outstanding debt. South Africa had helped her raise a total of R471 000 and cleared her student debt.
