Hlomla Dandala (born 22 September 1974) is a South African actor, TV presenter, and director. He played Derek Nyathi in the television soap opera Isidingo and Jacob Makhubu in the drama series Jacob’s Cross. He presented the reality dating show All You Need Is Love.

The actor made his television debut in 1995 in a reality show, ‘Channel O’. He played Kingsley Siseko Langa in the soap opera Scandal!

Early Life

Hlomla Dandala was born on 22 September 1974 in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, one of the nine provinces of South Africa. His father, Mvume Dandala, is a former presiding bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. Phumzile Dandala is his mother’s name. His grandfather, Reverend Killion Dandala, was a Methodist minister.

Dandala is the firstborn child of his parents. He has a younger sister, Gqibelo, who is a banker. He relocated to Johannesburg to establish his career. His acting enthusiasm dates back to his days in high school.

Education

Hlomla Dandala attended Sacred Heart College, Johannesburg. After matric, he enrolled to study drama at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Career

Dandala wears many hats as an actor, presenter, and director. He has played many roles in television shows and movies. In 1998, he landed the role of Derek Nyathi in the soap opera Isidingo.

Playing the title role of Jacob Makhubu in the soap opera Jacob’s Cross further brought him to the limelight. He presented the reality dating show All You Need Is Love between 2002 and 2003. He starred as Jet Hlatswayo in an SABC1 political thriller mystery drama series – End Game.

The actor played roles in the series Interrogation Room, Tsha Tsha and Gaz’lam, and the US daytime series Scout’s Safari. He portrayed Majola Tindleni in season two of SABC1’s drama series Zero Tolerance.

Aside from acting, he is a talented director. He handled three episodes of the drama series Hard Copy. Dandala directed seven episodes of Gaz’lam and episodes of the soap operas Generations and Backstage. 

Dandala appeared in many films, such as Fools in 1997, Red Dust in 2004, and Lord Of War in 2005. He appeared in the mini-series The Triangle in 2005 and the made-for-television movie Coup! He also directed The Bet for the Heartlines movie series on SABC2.

The actor portrayed Dr. Sipho Ramthalile in the medical drama series Jozi-H. He played Khanyiso Phalo, a returning expatriate who falls in love with a white woman, in the SABC2 mini-series Land of Thirst.

Dandala played Zweli Dikana, a police commissioner, in the much-loved 1Magic telenovela, The River. He left with two other actors to pursue new ventures, and some storylines have ended. He is a cast member in the Netflix original series Yoh! Christmas.

According to Zimoja, Hlomla Dandala to replace Zolisa Xaluva on the telenovela Smoke & Mirrors. He will take the role of a ruthless businessman, Caesar, who Zolisa played.

Hlomla Dandala married the television personality Candy Litchfield in 2001. Following revelations that Dandala fathered three children out of wedlock with Nkele Motsomi, Sisanda Gqirhana, and Brenda Nyakudya, many believed the couple separated in 2007.

In his defense, Hlomla claims to have fathered his children when they separated after he had moved on with his life. The couple formally parted ways in August 2013.

After divorcing Cindy, the star actor married Brenda Nyakudya. They ended their marital affair following his new wife’s infidelity. She brought another man on their matrimonial bed.

Hlomla Dandala speaks four languages – Afrikaans, English, Xhosa and Zulu.
