Early Life

Tyla was born Tyla Laura Seethal on 30 January 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is the middle child of five. She is from a multiracial ethnic group – Indian, Zulu, Mauritian, and Irish descent.

Convincing her parents to let her do music was not easy. She has an older sister, Whitney, a younger sister, Sydney, and a brother, Tyrese.


Tyla was studying Mining Engineering. Shortly after she started the course, she discovered her passion for music and decided to focus on it full-time.

Tyla gained a huge following on TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic by performing dance routines and sharing song covers.

Tyla dropped her first song, Getting Late, featuring Kooldrink in 2019. It became a hit, with its video hitting millions of views across streaming platforms. She looked up to singers like Aaliyah, Rihanna and Cassie.

The singer is signed to Epic Records in 2021. She dropped Water as the lead single from her upcoming debut album in July. A viral TikTok dance challenge drove the song.

Her song Water broke many records, including being the first South African solo act to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. It started at number 67, peaking at number 7 and on number 11. It is the first solo song by a South African musician to appear on the chart since 1968.

Tyla was named the support act for Chris Brown’s Under the Influence European tour in February 2023. She won the Best African Music Performance award at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California, U.S., in 2024. She made history as the youngest South African to win a Grammy.

The songstress will perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2024. Her song Water was nominated for Best International Song at the 44th annual Brit Awards in London next month. She is a nominee at the Mobo Awards for Best African Music Act.

Personal Life

Tyla was rumored to be dating Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema. She reacted by saying that they were just friends. They held hands on his show, and people interpreted it as though they were a couple. 

However, she revealed that she would like to go on a date with Rema. She likes to paint and draw. Spending quality time with her family and friends is on her love-to-do list.
